Professor at MIT

Professor Eltahir's research group is interested in understanding how regional land use/land cover change as well as global climate change may impact society through changes in the patterns of water availability, extreme weather, and spread of vector-borne diseases. We develop sophisticated numerical models (MIT Regional Climate Model (MRCM); and the Hydrology, Entomology and Malaria Transmission Simulator (HYDREMATS)) that are used for predicting such impacts at regional scales. We test these models against satellite observations and archived data sets of hydrologic and atmospheric variables, as well as data collected in our own field campaigns. Current research in the Eltahir group focuses on three general areas: 1) Regional climate studies, 2) Water and Disease, and 3) Water Resource Management.

Dr. Mohammed's research interests and approaches are at the interface between the agent and the host in the relevant environment at the local and global levels. Examples include the followings: Epidemiology and risk assessment of zoonotic vectorborne diseases with emphasis on food- and waterborne and arthropod-borne diseases in different food matrices and among different hosts and at the local and global levels. Of particular interest are foodborne bacterial (including Campylobacter spp., E. coli, Listeria moncytogenes, and Salmonella spp.) and protozoal (Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia sp.) infections. Among the arthropod-borne diseases, West Nile Virus and Rift Valley fever are of particular interest. The application of epidemiologic techniques to ecohealth approaches to understand the mechanism of emergence, introduction, transmission and perpetuation of infectious zoonotic diseases in different populations and to evaluate the cost effective intervention strategies to mitigate associated risk. Epidemiology of neurologic disorders including equine motor neuron disease as a possible model for the human amyotrophic lateral sclerosis its application in translation research.

Mai Hassan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science. Her research focuses on authoritarian and hybrid regimes, the state, land and violence, and ethnic politics with a regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Her current book project explores how authoritarian leaders vary management of the state sub-nationally to best meet electoral challenges to their rule after the introduction of multi-party elections. It does this through an in-depth look at Kenya's democratization process since the beginning of multi-party elections in 1992. The manuscript shows how international pressure to reform state institutions (often times through calls to decentralize power and engage in public sector reform) can actually hamper democratization.

Nisrin Elamin (she/her/hers) received her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Stanford University in 2019 and her B.A. in sociopolitical development studies from Harvard University in 2000. Her work explores the relationship between land, belonging, migration and geopolitics in postsecession Sudan and the broader Sahel region. Her current project examines the ways landless and landholding communities are negotiating and contesting changes in land ownership prompted by a recent wave of Gulf Arab corporate investments in Sudanese land. It situates contemporary, state-driven ‘land grabs’ in the agricultural Gezira region of central Sudan, within a layered history of enclosures and unequal landed relations shaped by legacies of enslavement and colonial rule. Methodologically, it combines a multi-sited ethnographic study of land dispossession in rural and peri-urban communities with a historical analysis of the ways the Gezira has been imagined as the answer to various colonial and post-colonial development visions. Her research has received support from the National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council and the Wenner-Gren Foundation. Nisrin’s writing on current affairs in Sudan and the broader Sahel region, has appeared in Al Jazeera, the "Monkey Cage" blog of the Washington Post, OkayAfrica, and the Egypt Independent. Prior to pursuing an academic career, Nisrin worked for more than 13 years as an educator, organizer, and advocate for various community-based organizations, schools and international agencies in the U.S., Chile, Brazil, and Tanzania. Before joining Bryn Mawr College, she spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow at the Society of Fellows, Columbia University, in New York City. Another research area in her laboratory is investigating the role of environmental endocrine disruptors in breast cancer of pre-menopausal women and how the gene-environment interaction contributes as a risk factor to the high incidence of breast cancer in pre-menopausal African American women. In addition to research, Dr. Eltom has a vast interest in graduate education, contributing as a trainer for Ph.D. students in biomedical sciences. She served as the inaugural director of graduate studies in pharmacology, and she set the foundation on the curriculum for the training program in pharmacology and toxicology at Meharry Medical College. Dr. Eltom has served on several review panels at the NIH, DOD and Philip Morris External Research Program and she is currently a chartered member of the Cancer Etiology Study section until 2018. Dr. Eltom is author of several peer-reviewed Publications. She served as a member of ASPET Committee on Diversity (2006-2010), and on the Advisory Committee for organizing the National Meetings of the Directors of Graduate Studies in Pharmacology (2005- ).
