Join our ASAPA guest speaker Ahmed el-Gaili, JD, who will discuss the November 21 Agreement and how it gives the military legitimacy and more control. He will also discuss opportunities for a constitutional democratic promise for Sudan. Ahmed el-Gaili is a partner at Latham & Watkins LLP, one of the largest global law firms. He previously served as Managing Partner of the Dubai office of Vinson & Elkins LLP and a Senior Associate Attorney at the London offices of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and prior to that an investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley in New York. He received a Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 2003 and a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in Economic Development Studies from Harvard College in 1998. While at HLS, he served as the Managing Editor of the Harvard International Law Journal. His published essay on “Federalism and the Tyranny of Religious Majorities in Sudan” was assigned for several years as required reading at a course at the Kennedy School of Government. Since then, Ahmed has written extensively on Sudan’s legal and constitutional challenges, including with respect to judicial independence, the constitutional role of religion, and the merits of a presidential system of government. Since 2019 he has been very involved in legal advocacy supporting the Sudanese revolution, including drafting an alternative constitutional charter and requesting the ICC to investigate the sit-in massacre. Ahmed currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Beirut Institute, a regional think tank. He previously served as the President of the Harvard Arab Alumni Association (HAAA) and on its Executive Board from 2010-2016.
